Drought Tolerant Mediterranean Designer Garden How-to

We craft all our gardens according to natural design patterns inspired by the most beautiful California and mediterranean-climate landscapes.

Drought tolerant is another huge priority in our design methodology. Plants should be improving water storage in our landscapes not draining our pipes. We primarily feature plants that can withstand water shortages when established.

Without further a-do here are the 4 Easy Steps to California Wild's Preplanned Gardens

  1. Find Your Style! Browse through our beautiful plant packages to find the colors and textures that call to you. Maybe you like a little more clean and formal, maybe you like hot reds or cool sage silvers. Pick a few if you like & then...California outdoor living in a backyard that matches your style
  2. Determine Your Garden Size Start with a single bed with one of our small sized packages or plan to do the whole backyard with a large! Our packages are sized to allow you to fill in small or large areas depending on your needs. Measure out the space you want to plant by walking heal to toe along both the short and the long edges of the bed and counting your steps (the original way of counting feet). Multiply the two numbers to get a rough idea of area and pick a small, medium or large plant package (or a few of each!) accordingly. How to Find a California Garden You Love
  3. Plan Your Install: Start by removing anything you plan to take out in the designated area. Then call up your parents, your friends or your gardener to schedule your planting day. We send you the installation instructions shortly after you place your order so you can get a feel for how much help you'll need. You can schedule your delivery date up to 30 days in advance with a minimum of 3 days notice. Keep in mind we only deliver on weekdays and it's best if somebody's home to receive the plants and place them somewhere safe when they arrive. How to Layout a California Mediterranean Landscape Design
  4. Start Digging: Once you get your plants - of if you're really keen a few days before - lay them out in the approximate arrangement as indicated in the design plans (see our how to layout your plants article for tips). If you'd like to start in advance you can also flag their spots with any type of marker. Dig your holes to 1.5x wider but no deeper than the plants will be. Place your plants in the hole, fill in and water.

Now you'll be well on your way to a California WILD preplanned garden! Once your plants have been installed you'll want to water and monitor them carefully for the first month or two until they look like they've gotten over the shock of going from pot to ground.
