Cultivated for centuries in the middle east, North Africa and on the dry islands and coast of the Mediterranean this small self-fertile almond bears gorgeous fragrant blossoms in Spring. With 500 winter chilling hours nuts follow in the fall, (for nut production these trees are best grown where winters are cooler or in mountain regions.
While today we think of almonds as water-wasteful crops due to modern commercial farming practices, they have actually been dry farmed in many regions of the world for centuries making them perfect for California's ever-fluctuating climate. A little extra water encourages a larger nut crop but keeping them on the drier side once established doesn't hurt either.
