These mega drought-tolerant native trees once covered the state of California — dotting hills and groves in the South, and valleys in the North. Eponymously named for it’s birthplace of Walnut, California (Walnut High shout out!) and better known, Walnut Creek, these usually small beautiful nut producers are edible. (They are slightly more bitter than commercial varieties.) For animal lovers, California Black Walnut trees are native bird magnets.
