Strawberry Tree - Arbutus 'Marina' or Arbutus unedo
This easy mediterranean native is an excellent landscaping plant and relative of the Pacific coast native Madrone. It's year-round leathery greens, windy red trunks, blueberry-bell shaped blossoms and charming mealy-but-edible small fruits make it a stand out as curbside or backyard tree. They grow to 25' in hot climates and 30'+ in Bay area and coastal. Drought-tolerant but need good watering to establish.
In Italy, where they grow wild on the West coast they're known as Sea Cherry and can be noted for better flavor. Here in California they're often better for birds than for people.
